Grief and Loss Counselling: Finding Meaning Through What Hurts

Grief is not something to get over. It is something we move through.
Each person’s journey with loss is deeply personal. Whether it is the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a change in health, or even the loss of identity, grief reshapes how we see ourselves and the world around us.

At Speaking Self, I believe that grief is not a sign of weakness but a reflection of love — a bond that continues even when life changes form. As a counsellor, I walk alongside clients as they navigate this tender space between holding on and letting go.

What Is Grief Counselling

Grief counselling provides a safe and compassionate space to explore the emotions that arise after a loss. It is not about rushing through pain but about making space for it, giving voice to what may have been buried, and finding meaning in the experience.

Grief can manifest in many ways — sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, or even confusion. These emotions may come and go, sometimes overlapping. Counselling helps you understand these experiences, offering language and support where words might have felt out of reach.

How Counselling Helps After a Loss

In grief and loss counselling, the focus is on understanding and healing, not fixing or forgetting. Together, we:

• Explore what the loss means to you and how it has affected your life
• Honour the bond and memories shared with the person or experience you have lost
• Recognise how grief shows up in the body, mind, and relationships
• Learn ways to manage overwhelming emotions and moments of emptiness
• Reconnect with your values, sense of identity, and purpose

My approach blends humanistic, existential, and emotion-focused perspectives, allowing room for authenticity, expression, and growth at your pace.

Understanding the Nature of Grief

Grief is not linear. It does not follow a predictable path. One day may feel calm, the next like an unexpected wave. It can challenge your sense of control and meaning. This unpredictability does not mean you are failing at grieving — it simply means you are human.

Through counselling, we begin to integrate the loss into your ongoing life story. Healing does not mean letting go of what was loved but learning to carry it with tenderness.

Finding Support in Melbourne and Online

Whether you are in Melbourne or anywhere else in the world, Speaking Self offers both in-person and online counselling to make support accessible wherever you are.

If you are feeling lost, uncertain, or simply need someone to listen, you are welcome to reach out. Together, we can explore what healing looks like for you and help you find a sense of calm amid change.

You Are Not Alone

Grief can feel isolating, but you do not have to walk this path by yourself. Healing begins when we allow our stories to be heard with care.

If you would like to begin your journey through grief counselling, you can get in touch today to arrange a session.

“Grief is love that has nowhere to go until we learn to let it breathe again.”
